2015 Black Music Month

June 11, 2015ivyNewsComments Off

For the month of June, we celebrate the influence of African American music on the world, Black Music Month. Within every genre…from Jazz, Hip-hop, R&B, Gospel to Opera, Country and more, African Americans have made pioneering contributions to musicthat have influenced and inspired generations.

The month long observance was first declared in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, with the encouragement of legendary songwriter-producer Kenny Gamble. In the years since, Dyana Williams has worked to honor the contributions of pioneers such as Chuck Berry, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and countless others who helped shape the American musical landscape.During the course of this month, renamed by President Obama as “African American Music Appreciation Month“, IBFF will highlight the “Kings and Queens” of Black Music and their contributions to music, film and more.
